Wells Chapel Church of God in Christ, Inc, formerly known as “The Bottom,” was established in Greenville, NC by Elder William Bennett who was a native of Fayetteville, NC. Following Elder Bennett, the Lord allowed Elder A.B. Malone to assume the role of Pastor. Under the direction of Elder Malone, the following auxiliaries were organized and worked to success: the Sunshine Band, Prayer & Bible Band, Young People Willing Workers (YPWW), Sewing Circle, and Sunday School. Elder Malone went to be with the Lord in October 1955, and God blessed the Saints with the great Bishop Wyoming Wells as their Pastor and Bishop.
God gave Bishop Wells a vision for a larger church for his people to worship Him. The building fund was initiated under his leadership, and he officially changed the name of the church from “The Bottom” to Wells Chapel COGIC as well as built a new sanctuary in September of 1963. After Bishop Wells passed, God sent another great leader. The honorable Bishop L.B. Davenport became the official Pastor and Bishop. God called Bishop Davenport home to a far greater place, but did not leave us without a leader.
God anointed and appointed another Pastor after His own heart who feeds us with knowledge and understanding. Superintendent Austin B. Parker, Sr. became pastor in 1991. Under his leadership, God has taken the church to a higher plateau. Souls are being fed the unadulterated Word of God, bodies are being healed, backsliders are being reclaimed, and the people are being made free. Through God, Superintendent Parker has established a holistic ministry that caters to the spirit, soul, and body.
The Lord gave Superintendent Parker a vision to build Him a new house of worship in October 1999. This vision started to unfold and manifest when we, the parishioners of Wells Chapel COGIC, Inc, purchased 15.9 acres of land in June of 2000. Phenomenally, this land was paid in full through tithes and offerings alone in May of 2002. The construction of this edifice started in the 2006 spring period and was completed in January 2007. This magnificent house of worship was dedicated to God on Saturday, February 3, 2007 and our first service was rendered the following day on Sunday, February 4, 2007. God has allowed us to erect a sanctuary fit for worship and sacrifice!
